DIY Lamp Makeover for Girl’s Bedroom

Here is how my daughter and I took her old lamps that she had when she was little and revamped them so they look more grown-up and sophisticated.  Check out our DIY lamp makeover for a girl’s bedroom.

It’s hard to keep up.  It seems like just yesterday she was in preschool and we were decorating her room with these super cute lamps with these cute little critters on them.  Her room was pink and we had polk-a-dot stickers on the wall.  She had a bed with a canopy on it.  It was super cute for her age.  Fast forward to today and she is in the fifth grade and her room is blue and there are no polk-a-dots on the walls.  Sigh.

We never got rid of these cute little lamps, though.  She liked the pull chain with the mushroom on the end of it.

So, we decided we’d do a little lamp revamp and spruce these guys up a bit.  Here’s how we did it.

DIY LAMP MAKEOVER

STEP ONE: SPRAY PAINT THE BASES

We taped up the cords and the electrical parts at the top and then we spray painted the bases silver.  We used Devine Color by Valspar Radiant Metals Metallic Interior Paint.

STEP TWO: SPRAY PAINT THE SHADES

Next, we spray painted the shades as much as we could.  We used Devine Color by Valspar Satin Color Paint & Primer.

Since there were green leaves all over the inside of the shade, I decided to paint that part with a brush and I just used some acrylic craft paint.  I was thinking of covering the shades in fabric and I didn’t want the old design showing through when we turned the light on.

STEP THREE: WRAP THE SHADES WITH FABRIC

After the shades were dry, we picked out this white fabric for the shades.  I just wrapped the fabric around the shade to see how much I would need.  Then I cut a piece of fabric for each shade leaving a little extra to wrap it inside the top and the bottom of the shade.

STEP FOUR: ADHERE FABRIC WITH GLUE DOTS

Then, I wrapped the fabric around the shade.  Because my fabric was a rectangle and my shade was wider at the bottom than at the top, I created little “pleats” around the top where I just gathered excess fabric and folded it over.  In order to secure all this fabric to the shade, I used permanent glue dots.  Yep, that’s right glue dots and they worked brilliantly.  I used large ones on the inside of the shade to hold the material to the shade and little glue dots on the outside of the shade and under my pleats to hold the pleat down.  I had tried fabric glue, but it wasn’t holding and I didn’t want to much of the white fabric with spray adhesive, so I tried glue dots.  They really have so many uses.

STEP FIVE: PAINT ACCENTS & POLYURETHANE THE BASES

Before we could call these lamps done, we had to paint those cute little mushrooms that were on the pull chains blue to match the accent wall in her room.  Then she went over the whole base with polyurethane.

Here is how our DIY lamp makeover looks.
