Have you ever heard of Dashi Dog or Tunip the Vegimal from the Octonauts? Unless you have a small child obsessed with The Octonauts, you probably haven’t. But, if you are like I was and you have a child that is obsessed with The Octonauts, you know that finding a Dashi Dog or Tunip the Vegimal Halloween costume isn’t going to happen. You are going to have to make one yourself. Keep reading to see how you can DIY Octonaut Halloween costumes for Dashi and Tunip.
DIY Octonaut Halloween Costume: Dashi Dog
Step 1 : Gather Octonaut Costume Supplies
First, put together the basic pieces that you can turn into a costume.
- Brown shirt – I found a brown shirt in the closet.
- Pink skirt – I ordered a pink skirt online.
- Blue boots – We splurged and bought blue Uggs that she wore all the time.
- Blue tights – We found some tights at Target.
- Camera – We used our Fisher-Price pink camera.
Now that you’ve got the basic pieces of your Dashi Octonauts costume, let’s get started on putting it together.
Step 2: Add Logos to Your Octonaut Costume
Second, print out some Octonauts logos on iron-on paper after you search for Octonauts images and find what you want. I printed directly onto the iron-on paper that I ordered online right on my home printer. Next, I ironed on a large Octonauts logo on the back of the shirt and a small logo on the front. You can shop this post below for printable iron on sheets. Now it already feels like an official Octonaut costume, but we’re not done.
Step 3: Dashi Octonauts Costume Name Tag
Third, Dashi has a name tag on the front of her official uniform, so let’s make an embroidered name tag for the front of the shirt. I just cut out an oval of felt and embroidered “Dashi” on to the felt and then sewed that on to the shirt. Now we officially have a Dashi Octonauts Halloween costume, but we can add more details.
Step 4: Octonaut Halloween Costume Collar
Fourth, make a blue felt collar and sew it onto the shirt. As you can see in my pictures, I just cut out the collar from medium blue felt, sewed on some little arrows from dark blue felt, and sewed the white trim all the way around the collar.
Step 5: Dashi Halloween Costume Skirt & Tail
Next, sew a border or trim on the skirt. I also added the little flower at the top of the skirt by just wrapping around the trim in a spiral pattern and then sewing it on the skirt by hand.
Don’t forget to make a puppy dog tail out of felt and sew it onto the back of the skirt. I stuffed this one with a little poly-fill. This step is completely optional, but I though it was a cute touch for Dashi Dog.
STEP SIX: Octonaut Halloween Costume Hat
Of course, your Dashi Octonauts costume will need a hat. So, here I used a felt bowl that I found at Michaels and I covered it with light blue felt. Next, I cut out a logo from white felt and sewed it onto a circle of medium blue felt and sewed the logo on to the hat by hand. I also added the rim around the hat and sewed the medium blue stripe around the rim. I did all of the hat with basic felt sheets.
Step 7: Dashi Octonauts Costume Air Tanks
Finally, make air tanks out of a pool noodle and duck tape for your Octonaut. I cut up a pool noodle to be the air tanks and I made the straps to hold it together with some pink polk-a-dot duck tape I found at Target. I thought this was a stroke of genuis and they were the perfect touch. My kids played with these air tanks long after Halloween was over.
Step 8: DIY Octonauts Halloween Costume Tunip the Vegimal
To make a little Tunip the Vegimal costume for my son, I just dressed him in an orange shirt and made a hat out of another felt bowl. I cut out green leaves from felt and sewed them on the hat/bowl. I used the stiff felt for this.
